Did you know that Fishers has a dedicated Health Educator?
Meet Kacy Brobst, who plays a pivotal role in promoting health and wellness throughout the Fishers community. Her daily routine involves engaging with both students and adults, imparting vital health education on various crucial topics.
A Day in the Life
Kacy spends much of her time in schools, teaching K-12 students about health and wellness. From the importance of handwashing to understanding mental health, Kacy ensures that young minds are well-informed about their well-being. She also conducts sessions for adults, covering essential topics like food safety and Narcan training to combat opioid overdoses.
From Classroom to Public Health
Transitioning from a high school teacher to a health educator allowed Kacy to blend her passion for teaching with her interest in public health. This new role has allowed her to apply her skills in a broader context, engaging with the community and addressing diverse health issues.
Community Involvement
Kacy encourages community members to get involved by visiting FHDs booths at local events, participating in activities, and learning more about the wide range of services offered. “Public health is much more than just vaccinations; it’s about comprehensive health education and community engagement!”
Mental Health Advocacy
One of the highlights of Kacy’s role is witnessing the positive response from students during her lessons. She recalls how enthusiastic students become about public health after participating in activities like the glow germ experiment, which illustrates the ease of germ transmission. These interactive sessions both educate and excite students about taking care of their health.
Kacy emphasizes the importance of mental health, particularly during back-to-school periods which can be stressful for many children. She encourages parents to monitor their children’s screen time and promote outdoor activities and imaginative play, aligning with guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
“We are so lucky to have an experienced HSE teacher in our health educator role,” said Monica Heltz, FHD Public Health Director. “Kacy’s enthusiasm and experience will get our youngest residents set up for success to take charge of their own health and wellness.”
