Our health education team adds workshops and trainings open to the community regularly. Please check out our event calendar to view and register for upcoming health education opportunities.

Health Education by Request

Our educators use and create evidence-based curriculums on many different health topics. Many of our workshops and trainings are ready to go and are available to request at no cost to you. We also offer certification-based trainings that typically include a fee.

To fulfill your request, we ask for at least 14 days notice to schedule and prepare your educational session.

About the Fishers Health Department

What does your local health department do? From our clinical services to community outreach, we aim to prevent illness, promote health, and protect our residents.  Our health education team will be glad to share an overview of how the staff works to support a strong and vibrant community where all Fishers residents can live, work, and play in. 

  • Duration: 20-30 minutes 
  • Best for: Adults— parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens who may interact with young people 

Catch My Breath: Introduction to Alcohol and Cannabis 

This essential lesson teaches 7-12th graders about alcohol and cannabis, explaining how these substances affect developing brains, the health and social consequences of underage use, and effective strategies for making healthy choices when facing peer pressure.

  • Duration: 45-60 minutes 
  • Best for: 7-12th graders, can be adapted for adults as well 

Catch My Breath: Introduction to Vaping and E-cigarettes 

This comprehensive, evidence-based program educates 6-12th grade students and their parents/caregivers about the dangers of vaping through age-appropriate lessons that provide accurate information, build refusal skills and exit strategies, and promote healthy decision-making to prevent nicotine addiction and protect lung health. 

  • Duration: 45-60 minutes 
  • Best for: 6-12th grades, can be adapted for adults as well

Dental Hygiene

Our engaging dental hygiene lesson introduces students to the anatomy of their mouths, demonstrates proper brushing and flossing techniques using colorful models, and provides clear instructions on what to do when they lose a tooth at school.

  • Duration: 25 minutes 
  • Best for: K-2nd graders

Fall Prevention

Falls are the number one reason for emergency service calls and injury related transports to the hospital for Fishers Fire Department. Our Fall Prevention presentation will cover home fall hazards, fall prevention tips, tools and tricks to help keep you safe and age safely in your home. In addition, we will highlight local resources, community organizations, and exercise facilities that can help support older adults and help to address their risk of falls.

  • Best for: Older adults that want to age safely in their home or family or caregivers

Handwashing

Our interactive handwashing lesson introduces students to the concept of germs, teaches them key moments for handwashing, and demonstrates the proper technique.

  • Duration: 20 minutes 
  • Best for: K-2nd graders

Healthy Eating on a Budget

This engaging, hour-long workshop teaches participants how to build balanced meals using MyPlate guidelines while maximizing their grocery budget through meal planning, smart shopping, and understanding food labels. Participants will learn to identify affordable, nutrient-dense foods in each food group and practice these skills throughout the session.  

  • Duration: 60 minutes 
  • Best for: Can be adapted for different age groups

How to use Naloxone

Be a lifesaver! In this training, participants will get an introduction to opioids, learn to recognize the signs of an overdose, and practice using life-saving naloxone. This hands-on session is designed to equip participants with the skills needed to act quickly in critical situations. Free naloxone kits are provided to eligible and interested participants at the end of the training.  Learn more about the FHD Naloxone program.

  • Best for: 18+ and older

Let’s Talk Technology

Our technology lesson empowers students to understand how digital habits shape their developing brains, using relatable scenarios to illustrate the importance of screen time boundaries, personal information protection, and online kindness. Through interactive discussions and age-appropriate examples, students discover how healthy technology use supports their growing brains, while practicing decision-making skills they can apply in their own digital interactions.

  • Duration: 25-30 minutes 
  • Best for: 3rd-6th graders

Mindfulness

Our mindfulness lesson helps students identify stress as a natural feeling in their bodies, connect it to challenging situations like tests or arguments with friends, and understand how stress affects their thinking and physical sensations, while equipping them with three simple breathing techniques they can independently use to calm their nervous systems and regain focus when feeling overwhelmed.

  • Duration: 25-30 minutes 
  • Best for: 3-4th graders

Opioids and the Brain

Our comprehensive opioid education lesson engages students with neuroscience-based explanations of how these powerful painkillers interact with brain receptors, potentially leading to dependence and addiction when misused. Through scientific frameworks accessible to adolescents, we emphasize critical harm reduction strategies including proper medication management and hands-on Naloxone administration training, empowering students with potentially life-saving knowledge they can apply in real-world situations.

  • Duration: 60-70 minutes 
  • Best for: High school students

Personal Hygiene 

This health lesson teaches young people about complete personal hygiene routines—from proper showering, hair washing, and face cleansing to using deodorant, caring for nails, applying basic skin care, and maintaining good dental habits—empowering them to develop healthy self-care practices that promote confidence and well-being. 

  • Duration: 45-60 minutes 
  • Best for: Can be adapted for K through 5th grade lessons 

Sex & Dementia

This compassionate workshop helps caregivers understand how dementia can affect sexual expression and desires in their loved ones, while providing practical strategies for preserving dignity, ensuring consent, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to navigate these sensitive changes. 

  • Duration: 45-60 minutes 
  • Best for: Caregivers of individuals with dementia

Talk Saves Lives suicide prevention training 

Talk Saves Lives, created by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), is an essential training program on suicide prevention. Participants will learn about the scope of suicide in the U.S., research findings on risk factors and warning signs, and how specific communities are uniquely affected. The training also explores protective strategies, proactive mental health care, and how to start meaningful conversations to offer support and access crisis resources. It’s designed for anyone seeking practical, real-world insights into preventing suicide. 

  • Duration: 60 minutes 
  • Best for: 18+ and older

Certified Pool Operator training (COMING SOON!)

ServSafe Food Handler & Manager Certification

ServSafe Manager Training offers flexible course and exam options to meet your needs and schedule. With FHD’s Health Educator serving as both instructor and exam proctor, you can complete the course and online exam on the same day, at the same location. Topics include food safety, microbiology, the flow of food, pest management, and employee training. This comprehensive training ensures you’re well-equipped to manage food safety effectively.

  • Duration: 8 hours (class and exam) 
  • Best for: Restaurant manager and assistant managers, chefs, dietitians, culinary arts instructors, school food service managers, Family and Consumer Science instructors, and others 
  • Fees: $30-$95 covers cost of health educator, ServSafe manager book, and/or exam voucher

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) trains adults to support adolescents (ages 12-18) facing mental health or addiction challenges, including crises. The course covers common youth mental health issues, typical adolescent development, and a 5-step action plan for providing help in various situations. Topics include anxiety, depression, substance use, psychosis, disruptive behavior disorders like ADHD, and eating disorders.  

  • Duration: 8 hours; in-person 
  • Best for: Adults— parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens who may interact with young people 
  • Fees: $60; covers cost of health educator fee and learning materials

Meet the Health Educators

With a combined 29 years of experience in science education, health promotion, and public health, our public health educators are dedicated to fostering well-being through engaging and evidence-based education. Together, they provide a well-rounded approach to empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills to make informed health decisions.

Kacy Brobst

Kacy Brobst is a Health Educator with the Fishers Health Department who joined the team in June 2023. Originally from Pennsylvania, Kacy has lived in several states including Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana. She holds a master’s degree in teaching and has a bachelors degree in biological sciences. Before joining FHD, Kacy taught life and physical science to high school students in Indianapolis and Fishers for 11 years. In her free time, Kacy enjoys reading, cycling, and watching reality television. She is married to Nick, a local educator and coach, and together they have two children.

Katie Wilkinson

Katie Wilkinson is a Health Educator with the Fishers Health Department who joined the team in January 2025. She was born in Fort Wayne, IN and grew up in Columbus, IN. Her educational background is in Psychology, Gender Studies, and Public Health and is a Master’s Certified Health Education Specialist. Her previous work experience involved health promotion and education in the higher education setting for the past 15 years, serving roles at Indiana University, Purdue University, Penn State University, Columbia University, and IU-Indianapolis. In her free time, she enjoys crafting, reading, baking, scary movies, and being a human companion to her partner Matt and chihuahua mix, Buck.
