The Indiana Department of Health has informed the Fishers Health Department (FHD) of the presence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in mosquito samples collected within Hamilton County. WNV activity is typically highest from July through September, during dusk and dawn. FHD encourages residents to:
- Reduce mosquito habitats by eliminating standing water like birdbaths, flowerpots, etc.
- Use EPA-registered insect repellents with DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
- Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and pants, particularly during dawn and dusk.
- Keep doors and windows closed or ensure screens are intact.
- Limit outdoor activity during dusk and dawn.
People over the age of 50 are at higher risk of developing serious illness from WNV. While most people infected do not experience any symptoms, some people do experience moderate to severe illness.
