Latent Tuberculosis Treatment – For Fishers Residents

The Fishers Health Department provides comprehensive case management and clinical services for Fishers residents diagnosed with or suspected of having Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI). Our goal is to prevent the development of active tuberculosis (TB) disease and stop its spread in our community. Since TB is a reportable condition, providers and laboratories are obligated to report positive test results to the Indiana Department of Health. The positive result is then sent to the local health department for case management.

What is LTBI? LTBI means you have TB germs in your body, but they are inactive. You don’t have symptoms, and you can’t spread the disease to others. However, if these germs become active, you could develop tuberculosis disease.

Our Treatment Process: If you are a Fishers resident identified with LTBI, a dedicated public health nurse (PHN) will be assigned as your case manager to guide you through the process. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Initial Contact & Assessment: Your nurse case manager will attempt to contact you by phone within 5 working days (or sooner if you are at high risk). During this first contact, they will explain your test results, verify your information, and conduct a basic assessment for symptoms of active TB disease.
  2. Medical Evaluation: You will be directed to complete a medical evaluation with a provider. This can be done at the Fishers Health Department clinic, Trinity Free Clinic (for Hamilton County residents), or a provider of your choosing.
  3. Required Screenings: Before starting treatment, you will typically need:
    • A chest X-ray (within six months).
    • An HIV test (within one year).
    • Baseline liver function tests if risk factors are present, as determined by the provider.
  4. Medication & Treatment Plan: Your nurse case manager will discuss recommended treatment regimens based on CDC guidelines. Medications can be obtained at no cost through the Fishers Health Department, filled by Purdue University Pharmacy, or you can elect to use your preferred pharmacy.

Our team is committed to providing consistent and timely care to help you successfully complete your LTBI treatment. If you have any questions, please call the Fishers Health Department at 317-567-5045, and select the option to speak to a Public Health Nurse.
